Safety & Security
Valuables
The facility cannot accept responsibility for a resident's personal belongings or valuables. Jewelry and large sums of money are best left with the resident's family. It is suggested that if the resident wishes to have pin money available, that the money be left with the Business Office staff for safekeeping.
Smoking
Fairvern continues to promote a smoke-free environment, however there is a designated smoking area on Fairvern's property for residents, family members, volunteers or visitors. This area is located just outside the Gazebo under the trellis. The Gazebo itself is designated as a 'No Smoking' area. Residents who smoke and wish to live at Fairvern will be asked to sign an agreement concerning the smoking area. A copy of the policy is made available to anyone wishing to see it prior to admission.
Resident Abuse Policy
Our Home has adopted a zero-tolerance abuse policy, which means that Fairvern upholds the rights of residents to be treated with dignity and respect within the Home and to live free from abuse and neglect. Abuse includes, but is not limited to physical abuse, sexual abuse and sexual assault, emotional abuse, verbal abuse, financial abuse, exploitation of a resident's property or person, neglect, prohibited use of restraints and measures used to discipline a resident. We ask that all incidents be reported immediately to the Charge Nurse on Duty. We assure residents, staff and volunteers who report incidents of abuse will not be dismissed, disciplined or penalized in any manner. All incidents of abuse or suspected abuse are fully investigated and must be reported to the Ministry of Health.
Violence Prevention
Fairvern is committed to a safe and supportive work environment in which all persons are accorded dignity and respect and fully recognizes a person's individuality. Violence towards any resident, staff member or member of the community will not be tolerated. Any individual, other than a resident, behaving in a verbally or physically aggressive manner, not related to a medical condition, will be requested to leave the Home.
This policy does not apply to residents with diagnosed medical conditions that affect their cognitive ability. These residents will be managed according to the interventions outlined in their care plan.
Hazardous Substances
Anything that could be considered a hazardous substance must be labeled and stored so it is inaccessible to residents. This means that lotions, deodorant, shampoo, mouthwash, soap, hair spray, etc. must be kept locked in the 2nd floor resident's closet or left with the nursing staff for storage. The 1st floor resident may keep these items in their top dresser drawers. This rule is made to protect those residents who do not have the judgement skills to use these substances safely.
Wet Floors
It is very important that "Everyone" obey the posted "WET FLOOR" signs. Wet floors are very slippery. This poses a risk for anyone to fall and sustain an injury.
Photographs
The Life Enrichment Department takes a digital photograph of each new resident on the day of admission for identification purposes. This is also necessary for security and safety reasons.
Pictures are reviewed periodically by the nursing department, and the Charge Nurse makes arrangements to have the photos updated should it be required.
Building Security
All exterior doors are alarmed to prevent unauthorized entry or exit for the security of our residents. Coded alarm systems are mounted at the entrance to the facility for our residents' safety. Please use the main entrance doors upon entering or exiting the facility. Elevators are available for movement between floors. To maintain the safety of our residents, some of whom suffer from dementia, our elevator doors are camouflaged for those residents with dementia who may seek exit. In an emergency, staff may provide direction to use alternate exits and/or stairways.
Fire Regulations
Fire drills are conducted each month for the safety of residents and staff. Fire exits are clearly indicated within the facility. Please cooperate with the requests of staff members when a fire alarm sounds. There may be an important reason why a request is made of you in this situation, with little time for a full explanation.
Equipment
To ensure equipment meets safety standards, our Environmental Services Coordinator must examine all electrical equipment brought in by residents or their families.
